Push Ups for Pennies Campaign

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I am kicking off my "push-ups for pennies" campaign today by doing 1,000 push-ups for Thanksgiving Day!

The proceeds for this campaign will go to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in honor of Alex Koehne.  Alex's Promise is a foundation in memory of Alex Koehne, a young Sag Harbor boy who lost his battle to a rare form of cancer.

All you have to do is contribute ONE PENNY for each push- up I do on the following days: Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day!

Don't forget, little things add up to something big and we can always make a difference with our acts of kindness.

Have fun following me today.  I may be calling on a few Epic Martial Arts students to pick up the slack for Sensei!

3 Reasons Children Should Take Martial Arts Lessons

Young people should take martial arts lessons for the following reasons:
1. Exercise is a life-saver.
2. Self-defense training can, in a worst-case scenario, be a life-saver.
3. There’s more talk and focus on respect, courtesy, and self-discipline in a week of good martial arts lessons than the average young person will hear in a year of TV and computer time.

Epic Martial Arts East's First Community Leadership Project!

It is our mission at Epic Martial Arts-East to teach our young students how to be leaders in our community.  In order to accomplish strong leadership skills we will be continually engaging our students in community service programs that require them to practice leadership.

We are pleased to announce that our first group leadership project will be our work with "Jordan's Initiative", a non profit foundation honoring the life and sacrifice of Marine Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter of Sag Harbor, New York.  Jordan was tragically killed while serving our country in Iraq in April 2008.  He has been awarded the Navy Cross for his extraordinary heroism in saving the lives of 23 United States Marines and over 20 Iraqi Police.

The Sag Harbor community has continued to honor our hero in many ways, including the Jordan Haerter Memorial Bridge, Community Spirit Awards to Pierson High School students, Wheels to Freedom project and Care Packages to our Troops projects.

At Epic Martial Arts-East, we are very excited to participate in the collection of supplies for the Care Package Project for our troops who are deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.  We are encouraging our students to bring in supplies before November 18th and add them to the collection box.  On Saturday Nov.19th at 9 am our students will also volunteer to help organize the packages and prepare the supplies for shipment at the Sag Harbor Village Ambulance Barn.

Please visit www.jordansinitiative.com for more information and to support their continued efforts to provide aid and support for military personnel, veterans and their families.

Respectfully,
Sensei

"My Life is My Dojo"

“Dojo” means “school” in Japanese — literally, “the place where you find the Way.” And while every country has its own name for school (it’s a different word in Korean, Chinese, etc.), the important part of this statement is that your life is your school — your LIFE is the place where you find the Way.

Should you ever decide to take martial arts lessons, of any kind, I hope that you would be lucky enough to find a teacher who understands and practices the idea of my life is my dojo.

When a student is on the mat, executing punches or kicks, rolls or break-falls, leg locks or arm bars, and/or blocks and parries, all sorts of things are learned, such as the patience required to polish the maneuvers, the control you have to exercise to do it right, the teamwork it takes to participate with a your partner and classmates, and the understanding of the return one gets on effort and consistency. What a shame it would be if we failed to take those lessons “out of the dojo and into the world.”

The real lessons in our school, the valuable ones, are the ones we practice on the mat, but fully understand that we’re practicing for the purpose of making something in our life work better, smoother, and with more mastery. We practice in our school, what we wish to see in our lives. That’s what we know to be the most valuable aspect of what we do in our school.

By the way, if you’re not a student, but you’d like to see what it’s like to be one, just mention this post, and we will give you a pass to come in and try classes. Every great journey begins with some small movement in a new direction, yes?

And here’s a secret: I think, “My students are my dojo.” I learn what I need to learn by helping others to do, well...all of the above.
